菲牛蛭在我国主要分布在广东、广西、福建、云南、海南及香港等地，是海南水田中的优势种，早些年野外密度很大。
虽然现在野生水蛭日益减少，但有些资源条件好的地区还是可以捕捉到，能带来可观的经济收益。
下面说一说在野外捕捉菲牛蛭方法：
网兜捕捞
菲牛蛭对水的动态非常敏感，在水稻田、池塘、水渠等水域，不论白天黑夜都可捕捉。 只要用网兜在水中搅几下，菲牛蛭就会从泥土中、水草间游出来，此时即可乘机用网兜捕捉。
猪血诱捕
先将干稻草扎成两端紧中心松的草把，然后将生猪血（每亩大田用0．5公斤）注入草把内，横放在大田进水口处，进水不宜过大，一般以水能经过草把慢慢流入大田为宜。让水慢慢冲洗猪血成丝状漂散全田，利用血的腥味把田中菲牛蛭引诱到草把中吸取没有流出的猪血，待菲牛蛭吃饱、身体膨大时，就很难再爬出来了。放入草把后4至5个小时即可取出草把，收取菲牛蛭。如无生猪血，也可用鸡、鸭、鹅等畜禽的血液替代，也能收到同样效果。
丝瓜筋诱捕
把丝瓜筋浸在猪血鸡血或其他动物血中一段时间，等其吸透后，捞出晾干。在水田等菲牛蛭出没的当地，隔一段距离放一块在水中。菲牛蛭闻到血腥就会钻进去。间隔一段时间即可捞出丝瓜筋，用小棍子敲打，将菲牛蛭震出。丝瓜筋可如此反复利用。
诱捕剂诱捕
诱捕挤操作方便，可使近100米的菲牛蛭闻味而爬进你准备好的诱捕器内，使用方法很简单，捕捉器里面放点菲牛蛭诱捕剂，然后把捕捉器放到水里即可，如果是活动的河水，要用绳子拴住捕捉器以防被水冲走。水流速快也可在捕捉器里放点小石块，添加重量，使其稳固。放好后诱捕剂气味会顺着水传出去，菲牛蛭闻到这种特殊气味，就非常的喜爱，就会很多的顺着气味而来，你只需要把捕捉器拿出来，拿个袋子去捡拾即可。
